Lady Cougars Defeat BGSU in Fall Season Opener

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. - The Mount Vernon Women's Lacrosse team (1-0) defeated Bowling Green State University on Saturday, October 15th, 2022 in their fall season opener.

The Lady Cougars came out strong with Samantha Poor scoring in the first two minutes of the game after a won draw by Liz Hartzler. This momentum would not last long though, as near the end of the first quarter, Bowling Green responded with three goals. MVNU's defense adjusted and was able to stop the falcons for most of the second quarter. After going on a run in the middle of the second, the Cougars would score four goals in a row making the score 5-4 Mount Vernon at the half.

With a close start going into the second part of the game, Rebekah Kalas came out strong with a goal to start the third quarter. Even though the Lady Cougars struggled not turning the ball over in transitions, senior captain Poor states that "we know what we have to work on in practice this week and will come out even stronger against Taylor on Saturday." To finish out the game, Laney Jackson would continue to rack up the saves in goal, putting her at a total of nine. The excitement was evident on every Lady Cougars' face as the final game buzzer went off and they won their first game in the new CH4 Stadium by a final score of 10-7.

Karlee Whitesell scored two goals.

Kalas scored two goals.

Zoe Nita had one goal, and one assist.

Jane Gum had one goal.

Hartzler had one goal.

Cam Sipes had one goal.

Jackson had nine saves in goal and eight clears.

The Cougars were 11 for 21 at the draw by Whitesell, Kyer, Poor, and Hartzler.

What's Next

The Lady Cougars will fine-tune some things with a full week of practices before they take on Taylor University in Upland, Indiana on Saturday, October 22. The draw is set for 11:00am.
