Lady Cougars Fall to Maple Leafs

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team (5-4, 1-2) hosted the Goshen College Maple Leafs (4-4, 1-2) in a Crossroad League conference game on Wednesday, December 4.  

The Maple Leafs set the pace and took control early in the first quarter. Goshen led MVNU 14-7 with four minutes remaining in the period. However, the Lady Cougars quickly closed the gap with help from senior Katie Sprang, who hit a three-pointer, and freshman Serenitee Johnson, who added a layup, bringing the score to 19-16 at the end of the quarter.

The game remained tight in the second quarter, with the Lady Cougars taking the lead in the final minutes. MVNU entered halftime with a 37-31 lead over the Maple Leafs.

In the second half, the Lady Cougars maintained their lead, but Goshen refused to back down. By the end of the third quarter, MVNU still held a 49-44 advantage.

In the final quarter, Goshen continued to rally. With four minutes remaining, Goshen tied the game at 57-57, and eventually took the lead for good. The contest ended with a 67-59 victory for the Maple Leafs.

MVNU shot just 36.5% from the field and 16.7% from three.

The Lady Cougars had 13 assists and 16 turnovers.

Goshen outrebounded MVNU 48-41 and had 15 offensive boards.

Johnson – 18 points (7-18 FG, 1-4 3PT, 3-3 FT) 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals.

Teresa Maggio – 13 points (5-14 FG, 3-4 FT) 2 rebounds, 4 assists.

Angela Roshak – 13 points (5-9 FG, 3-4 FT) 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block.

Sprang – 5 points (2-7 FG, 1-3 3PT) 2 rebounds.

 

What's Next:

The Lady Cougars will be traveling to Huntington University to take on the Foresters in a Crossroads League game on Saturday, December 7 at 1:00 p.m.
