Lady Cougars Fall in Close Battle at No. 25 IU South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. —  The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team (1-2) went up against the No. 25 Indiana University South Bend Titans (1-0) on Saturday, November 2 on the road.

IU South Bend began the game with a strong first quarter, outpacing MVNU 24-12 and establishing a lead of 16 points at the 2:20 mark. In the second quarter, the Lady Cougars narrowed the gap by scoring 14 points compared to the Titans' 11, bringing the halftime score to 35-26.

In the third quarter, MVNU's offense was highly explosive, shooting an impressive 64.3%. They outscored South Bend 24 to 11. At the end of the quarter, MVNU led with a score of 50 to 46.

MVNU secured a six-point lead at the 8:28 mark, bringing the score to 54-48. However, South Bend's offense found its rhythm, gaining momentum and not looking back. The Lady Cougars ultimately fell in a tightly contested match by a score of 62-67.

MVNU recorded a shooting percentage of 41.8% from the field and made 7 three-pointers in the game.

MVNU was outscored in the paint, losing by a margin of 42 to 26.

MVNU bench outperformed the IU South Bend bench, scoring 18 points compared to just 3 for the hosts.

South Bend capitalized on the 19 total Lady Cougars turnovers, scoring 16 points off those mistakes.

What's Next:

The women's basketball team will have its home opener on Friday, November 8, kicking off Homecoming weekend. The Lady Cougars will face the Concordia University Cardinals at 5:00 p.m. in Ariel Arena.
