Team Effort Leads to Road Win at Taylor

UPLAND, Ind. The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team (8-13, 2-9) got a big road win at Taylor University (9-12, 4-7) on Wednesday, January 31.

MVNU started slow as it got down 17-7 midway through the first quarter. Coach Amanda Short turned to her bench to give MVNU a spark, and they did just that. The Lady Cougars rode their bench and pulled to within 43-39 at the break. Grace Vermilya and Shalen Guilliams carried the load in the first half. The duo from Loudonville, Ohio stepped up big for the Lady Cougars. Vermilya had 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a block at the half, and Guilliams drained three from deep for 9 points to keep MVNU afloat.

In the second half, MVNU stifled the Trojan offense, allowing just 26 second half points and 25.7% shooting from the floor. MVNU outscored the hosts 18-9 in the third quarter and put the game away in the fourth with a lights-out 77.8% clip from the floor. Free throws down the stretch from Jaelle Keller clinched the 83-69 win for MVNU. Every Lady Cougar got their name on the scoresheet in the victory.

Peyton Davis – 9 points (2-4 FG, 5-6 FT), 3 rebounds, 1 steal
