Lady Cougars Fall in Hard-Fought Battle at No.5 Marian

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team (7-11, 1-7 CL) battled the fifth-ranked Marian University Knights (17-1, 8-0 CL) in Indianapolis on Wednesday, January 17.

 

MVNU got off to a great start and led by as many as 14 in the ballgame. At the half, MVNU held a 39-30 lead. With 4:20 remaining, MVNU held a 71-64 lead after a Noelle Lavery floater. The offense went cold for the Lady Cougars as Marian picked up the pressure. The hosts used an 8-0 run to claim its first lead of the game with 2:28 remaining. Despite MVNU giving it all they had, the fifth-ranked team in the country was able to escape at home with an 80-74 victory.

MVNU shot 53.6% from the field and 47.1% (8-17) from three. Despite the hot shooting, Marian was hotter as it shot 55.4% from the field.

15 MVNU turnovers led to 16 points for Marian.

Marian capitalized off its 8 offensive rebounds, leading to 15 second chance points.

Missed free throws hurt MVNU, especially down the stretch. The Lady Cougars finished 6-13 at the line (46.2%) on the evening.
