Women’s Basketball Claims First Conference Win of Season

MISHAWAKA, Ind. The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team (7-8, 1-4) defeated Bethel University 73-71 on the road on Saturday, January 6.

MVNU overcame a six-point deficient with 4:38 left in the game to claim its first Crossroads League victory of the season. Madelyn Lawson was big down the stretch as she gave MVNU a 69-67 lead after a bucket and foul with 1:42 left. After a Bethel basket to tie the game at 69-69, Lawson hit a layup with 21 seconds left to put the Lady Cougars up for good. Free throws by Emily Walker and Peyton Davis down the stretch iced the game for MVNU.

 

Inside the Box Score:

Bethel shot 48.3% from the field and connected on 8-17 of its threes (47.1%). MVNU shot 40.4% from the field and 21.4% (3-14) from three.

Despite the hot shooting from Bethel, MVNU was able to force 15 turnovers, leading to 11 points.

MVNU was aggressive offensively as it got to the foul line 30 times. The Lady Cougars took advantage, hitting 24 of their attempts (80%).

MVNU's bench was huge, providing 22 points.

Davis – 22 points (5-10 FG, 11-14 FT, 1-1 3PT), 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 assists.

Lawson – 12 points (5-12 FG, 2-2 FT), 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal.

Noelle Lavery – 12 points (6-15 FG), 3 rebounds.

Grace Vermilya – 10 points (3-4 FG, 4-4 FT), 1 assist, 1 block.
