Lady Cougars Fall to Governors State in Winter Classic Opener

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill.  The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team (5-7, 0-3) fell to Governors State University (10-3, 5-1) on Thursday, December 28.

The first half remained closely contested, with a tied score of 34 each at the break. However, in the third quarter, the Lady Cougars struggled, being outscored 21-9. Ultimately, MVNU fell short, concluding the game with a 78-70 loss.

MVNU shot 42.9% (24-56) from the field and 33.3% (5-15) from three-point range. Governors State shot 51.6% (33-64) from the field and 30.0% (3-10) from three-point range.

MVNU had 15 turnovers leading to 18 points for Governors State. Governors State had 14 turnovers leading to 9 points for MVNU.

MVNU dominated in the paint, scoring 36 points compared to Governors State's 22 points.

MVNU outrebounded the Jaguars 40-38 in the game.

Governors State outscored MVNU 28 to 13 in bench points.
