MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (5-2) continued its Spring Games stretch at the USSSA Space Coast in Melbourne, Florida with a two-game match-up against the University of Michigan Deaborn (1-3) and Cornerstone University (7-3) on Tuesday, March 4.
Game 1 vs Michigan Dearborn:
Michigan Dearborn took an early lead in the first inning, scoring a run to take a 1-0 advantage. The Lady Cougar bats got hot in the top of the fourth inning with Brooklyn Krum leading the charge. Krum hit a two-run single to left that brought home Skylar Zimmerman and Mollie Pentz, giving MVNU a 2-1 lead. Now holding a 4-1 lead, MVNU opened the seventh inning with singles from both Avery Miller and Kiera Mayer. Miller and Mayer would then score to go up 6-1, thanks to another two-run single from Krum. MVNU played strong defense against the Wolverines on the day and got a strong pitching performance from Maddelyn Wine, who picked up her second win in the circle. Wine pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits on the day while striking out six Wolverines.
Game 2 vs Cornerstone:
MVNU started the second game strong, scoring three runs in the first. Kylie Rohr singled up the middle and was later scored by a Miller RBI single to right field. Pentz then hit a two-RBI single to left field that scored Mayer and Miller to put the Lady Cougars up 3-0. In the third, Pentz tripled to left, scoring Zimmerman to go up 4-1. Now with a 5-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning, the Lady Cougars placed two more runs on the board. A Jesenia Montalvo single to left helped advance Rohr, who later scored on a sac-fly from Mayer. Montalvo then scored after an RBI single from Zimmerman to put MVNU up 7-1. In the final inning, MVNU helped itself to two more runs and would go on to defeat the Golden Eagles 9-3. Nadia Hoffman picked up her second win of the season, after pitching 6.1 innings. Hoffman allowed seven hits and two earned runs to go with three strikeouts. Hoffman was relieved by Bailey Sheets, who had two strikeouts to close the game.
What's Next:
The Lady Cougars will be playing their final games in Florida against Dordt University at 9:00 a.m. and Judson University at 11:15 a.m. at Fortune Road Complex on Wednesday, March 5.
