Cougars Open Series at Marian with Pair of Losses

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. —  The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (23-13, 11-11 CL) headed to MU Ballpark on Thursday, April 3, for a Crossroads League doubleheader against the Marian University Knights (18-16, 14-8 CL).

 

Game 1 Summary:

In game one, MVNU struck first in the opening inning, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Brady Lester that scored Grant Wheeler for an unearned run. Marian quickly responded in the bottom of the frame, tying the game at 1-1 with a fielder's choice RBI. In the third, MVNU regained the lead with a single from Lester that drove in Grant Moore, making it 2-1.

However, Marian answered back in the bottom half, plating two runs to pull ahead 3-2. The home team extended its lead in the sixth inning with a three-run homer, pushing the advantage to 6-2. MVNU chipped away in the seventh, scoring on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 6-3. Marian sealed the game in the eighth with a two-run homer, securing an 8-3 victory.

 

Game 2 Summary:

In game two, the Knights scored the game's only run in the bottom of the first on a fielder's choice, taking a 1-0 lead. That lone run held as Marian secured a 1-0 victory. Jared Hurlburt started on the mound, pitching 5.0 innings with four strikeouts while allowing two hits and one run. Caden Conn came on in relief, throwing 1.0 inning and recording two strikeouts. MVNU had a total of four hits in the game.

 

What's Next:

The Cougars will conclude their Crossroads League doubleheader series against the Marian University Knights on Monday, April 7, at MU Ballpark in Indianapolis, Ind., with game one set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
