Baseball Sweeps Wolverines in Fall Doubleheader

ROYAL OAK, Mich. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (3-0) continued its fall season on Saturday, October 5, wrapping up the series with a doubleheader against the University of Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines (1-10) at Leprechauns Stadium.

 

Game 1 Summary:

It all started in the 4th inning for MVNU when Rider Minnick stole second base, allowing Grant Moore to score on a passed ball, giving MVNU a 1-0 lead. Shortly after, Kaid Carpenter singled through the left side, driving in Minnick to extend the lead to 2-0.

In the 5th inning, Moore delivered a double to center field, bringing home Grant Wheeler and Zackary Hoop for two RBIs, increasing the lead to 4-0. Minnick followed up with a double down the left field line, driving in Moore to make it 5-0.

The 7th inning saw Wheeler blast a solo home run, pushing the lead to 6-0. Jarin Bertke got the start, going five innings and allowing only two hits to go with seven strikeouts. Maxwell Donawa got the save in two innings pitched. The Cougars won by a score of 6-0.

 

Game 2 Summary:

The Cougars took control early in the second game and never looked back, amassing 19 hits and 22 runs with 17 RBIs. Carpenter and Moore led MVNU with 3 RBIs apiece. Ryan Willoughby started the game, pitching four innings and recording two strikeouts got the win, while Caden Conn secured the save with four strikeouts over two innings. MVNU won by a final score of 22-0.

 

What's Next:

MVNU baseball will wrap up its fall season on Saturday, October 12, with a home doubleheader against the Ohio Christian Trailblazers. The doubleheader at the Cougar Baseball Field is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
