Baseball Falls in Battle vs. Indiana Wesleyan

UPLAND, Ind. — The fifth-seeded Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team faced off against No.2 Indiana Wesleyan University in bracket play of the Crossroads League Baseball Tournament on Thursday, May 2, hosted by Taylor University.

In the top of the second inning, Brady Lester hit a home run over the center field fence, giving MVNU an early 1-0 lead. IWU answered with runs in the bottom of the second and third innings, taking a 2-1 lead. MVNU struck back in the fourth, with Lester's single driving in Johnny Nixon, followed by Joe Poremsky's RBI single that brought home Lester to put MVNU up 3-2. The Cougars extended their lead to 4-2 in the sixth inning with Poremsky's deep right-centerfield RBI double that scored Lester. IWU fought back with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game at 4-4. In the eighth inning, IWU took the lead on a sacrifice fly to go up by a run. MVNU was unable to push across the tying run in the ninth and would fall by a final score of 4-5.

MVNU is set to clash with the sixth-seed Marian University Knights in a crucial Crossroads League Baseball Tournament elimination game matchup on Friday, May 3. First pitch at Taylor University is at 11:00am.
