Baseball Drops Two Against Saint Francis

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (21-23, 17-17) faced off against the University of Saint Francis (33-14, 23-11) in a conference doubleheader held at Cougar Field on Friday, April 25.

In the first game, USF took an early lead by scoring five runs in the top of the second inning. MVNU responded in the bottom of the inning with a run scored from Kaid Carpenter's double to right field, bringing Brady Lester home and making it 1-5. USF extended its lead with runs in the third and sixth innings, making it 7-1. MVNU rallied in the bottom of the seventh as Johnny Nixon reached base on an error, leading to an RBI with Hogan Heck scoring, bringing the score to 2-7. Lester's double then brought in Grant Moore, narrowing the gap to 3-7. Joe Poremsky's single added another run as Nixon crossed home plate, making it 4-7. Blaine Keener's sacrifice fly continued to close the gap, with Lester tagging home to make the score 5-7. In the bottom of the ninth, Poremsky's home run to right field put another run on the board, but MVNU's late comeback efforts fell short as it lost 6-7.

In the second game, USF had a 7-0 lead by the bottom of the fourth inning. MVNU's only run in the game came from Heck, who delivered an RBI single to right field. MVNU managed a total of five hits in the 1-7 loss.

MVNU baseball will close its regular season with another doubleheader against the University of Saint Francis at Cougar Field on Friday, April 26 at 1:00 pm.
