Offense Lifts Cougars to Two Wins Over Maple Leafs

GOSHEN, Ind. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (19-21, 15-15) played two games at Goshen College (12-30, 7-23) on Friday, April 19.

MVNU took game one by a final score of 12-6. The Cougars had 14 hits in the game and capitalized on its opportunities at the plate. Trailing 1-3 in the fourth, MVNU reclaimed the lead and would not trail again after a three-run inning. Minnick brought home two runs with a double to right field, and Kalman gave MVNU the lead with a deep sac-fly that scored Hogan Heck. Goshen would tie the game at 5-5, but Heck's two-run double scored Joe Poremsky and Owynn Gleason to go up 7-5. A five-run eighth inning put the game away for good. Maxwell Donawa was credited with the win after pitching 4.1 innings of relief. The junior allowed just four hits and two runs while striking out eight. Logan Fox also had eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings during his start on the mounds.

The bats did not cool off in game two as MVNU erupted for 20 hits in the 19-7 victory. The ballgame went MVNU's way immediately as it jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first and led 10-0 after two. Heck, Minnick, Poremsky, and Zackary Hoop each had three RBI in the game. Brady Lester finished the day with three hits and two RBI. The freshman hit his eighth home run of the season in the fourth inning. Austin Fox picked up the win for MVNU after four innings of relief. The freshman had eight strikeouts and allowed just two hits and two runs.

With the two wins, MVNU clinched a spot in the Crossroads League Tournament.

MVNU finishes its series with the Maple Leafs on Saturday, April 20. The doubleheader at Goshen begins at 12:00pm.
