MVNU Falls Twice to Spring Arbor

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (17-21, 13-15) concluded its four-game set with Spring Arbor University (17-22, 12-16) with a doubleheader at the Cougar Baseball Field on Monday, April 15.

In the first game, SAU took an early lead, scoring a run in the top of the third inning. The guests extended their lead in the top of the fourth with three more runs, bringing the score to 4-0. MVNU responded in the bottom of the fourth when Brady Lester reached first base on a throwing error, driving in Rider Minnick for a run. SAU added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, increasing its lead to 6-1. MVNU's offense came alive in the bottom of the fifth, with Casey Kalman hitting an RBI single, Johnny Nixon adding another RBI single, and Lester reaching base on an error and driving in a run as Carter LaPata scored, bringing the score to 4-6. SAU scored another run in the top of the sixth, making it 7-4. In the bottom of the seventh inning, MVNU rallied with three runs to tie the game at 7-7. Lester contributed with an RBI single, followed by Kaid Carpenter's two-run home run. SAU would score the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning and went on to win by a final score of 8-7.

In the second matchup, SAU took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Lester got MVNU on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, bringing Grant Moore home. SAU extended its lead with another run in the top of the fifth inning, making it 4-1. MVNU fought back as Lester's RBI single brought Minnick home, closing the gap to 2-4. Hogan Heck later contributed with an RBI single, scoring Owynn Gleason and bringing MVNU to within one. Despite MVNU's efforts, it fell short in game two.

 

What's Next:

MVNU baseball will face off against Goshen College on the road on Friday, April 19. The first game starts at 2:00pm in Goshen, Indiana.
