MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (17-19, 13-13) began its series against Spring Arbor University (15-22, 10-16) at the Cougar Baseball Field on Saturday, April 13.
In the opening game, MVNU took an early 1-0 advantage in the second inning courtesy of Ryan Willoughby's RBI walk. MVNU extended its lead to 2-0 in the third inning with Johnny Nixon's RBI single. SAU responded in the fourth inning, scoring four runs to take a 4-2 lead. MVNU narrowed the gap to 3-4 in the bottom of the fourth as Casey Kalman capitalized on a throwing error, driving in a run. SAU surged ahead with three runs in the fifth inning, leading 7-3. MVNU scratched off a run in the sixth with Rider Minnick's RBI double, cutting the deficit to 4-7. The seventh inning saw Hunter Billman's RBI walk and Grant Moore scoring on a wild pitch cut the deficit to 6-7. In a thrilling eighth inning, Nixon's two-run RBI single and Kaid Carpenter's two-run RBI single propelled MVNU to a 10-7 lead. Cruz McFadden sealed the victory with two strikeouts in the ninth inning for the save. Maxwell Donawa got the win on the mound after pitching 3.1 innings of scoreless and hitless baseball in relief.
In the second game, MVNU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a home run by Minnick. SAU leveled the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning with a fielder's choice RBI. The game remained tied until extra innings where SAU scored three runs. The final score of game two saw MVNU fall 1-4.

MVNU baseball will be facing off against Spring Arbor University again in a home doubleheader on Monday, April 15. The first game begins at 1:00pm.
