Cougars Close Series with Split Against Foresters

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (12-8, 8-2) wrapped up its series with Huntington University (12-11, 7-5) at the Cougar Baseball Field on Saturday, March 16.

In game one, Huntington took the lead in the third inning, going up 3-0 early on. MVNU quickly responded with a three-run shot by Johnny Nixon in the bottom of the third, tying the game at three apiece. Huntington regained the lead in the fourth inning, scoring three more runs to go up 6-3, and extended its advantage to 12-3 in the sixth inning. MVNU managed to score another run in the bottom of the sixth with Kaid Carpenter's RBI single. MVNU fell in the end by a final of 4-15.

MVNU's offense ignited in game two as it scored in the first to take an early 1-0 lead on a sac-fly RBI from Nixon. The guests responded with two runs in the top of the second to take the lead. However, MVNU surged ahead in the bottom half of the inning to go up 6-2. Rider Minnick contributed with an RBI single, Zackary Hoop scored on a wild pitch, Nixon hit a two-run homer, and Brady Lester followed with a solo home run. Ryan Willoughby added a two-run RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 8-2. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Minnick scored on a throwing error, and Lester smashed his second homer of the game, this time a three-run shot. The final score was 12-3, with Jarin Bertke earning the win after pitching 5.2 innings. Bertke allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out four in the victory.

 

What's Next:

Baseball is set to take on Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana on Monday, March 18. The doubleheader begins at 1:00pm.
