Cougars Split Conference Doubleheader Against Huntington

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (11-7, 7-1) hosted Huntington University (11-10, 6-4) at the Cougar Baseball Field on Friday, March 15.

In the first game, Huntington took an early lead by scoring the first three runs in the top of the third inning. MVNU managed to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to an RBI single from Blaine Keener. Kaid Carpenter then started MVNU's run in the bottom of the ninth inning with a sac-fly RBI, bringing the score to 2-3. The game was ultimately won by Rider Minnick, who delivered a two-run walk-off single, securing the 4-3 victory. Cole Schreck pitched seven innings, allowing three hits and three runs. Austin Fox took over for the final two innings, giving up two hits but ultimately earning the win.

In game two, MVNU took an early lead with Johnny Nixon's RBI single in the bottom of the first, putting them ahead 1-0. However, Huntington responded in the top of the second inning by scoring twice, taking a 2-1 lead. Nixon once again contributed with an RBI in the bottom of the third inning, tying the game at 2-2. Huntington then surged ahead with a three-run rally in the top of the sixth inning, fueled by an RBI single and a two-run home run, making it 5-2. Brady Lester's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth narrowed the gap to 3-5. Ultimately, Huntington secured the win with an RBI single. MVNU fell by a score of 3-6.

 

What's Next:

MVNU will conclude its series against Huntington University on Saturday, March 16. The doubleheader at Cougar Field begins at 12:00pm.
