Cougars Close Spring Break Trip with 8-6 Victory Against Mustangs

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (8-6) finished its spring break trip to Florida on a high note with a 8-6 victory against Morningside University (10-4) on Tuesday, March 5.

MVNU got on the board fast with a Johnny Nixon single that drove in Rider Minnick and Hogan Heck in the first. The Mustangs scored six unanswered runs to claim a 6-2 advantage. A huge bottom-fifth for the Cougars flipped the game entirely. MVNU scored five runs after Casey Kalman hit a two-run single and Blaine Keener drove in three after smashing a double to clear the bases. Zackary Hoop added a run with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. With the score 8-6 for MVNU, the game was sent into a lightning delay and would eventually be called due to the elements.

Nixon pitched four innings in his start and gave up eight hits and three earned runs. Nixon had one strikeout. Reese Willoughby claimed the win after holding down an inning late and striking out a batter.
