Cougars Complete Sweep of Bethel

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (7-4, 4-0) completed the series sweep of Bethel University (5-9, 0-4) on Saturday, March 2 in Auburndale, Florida.

After winning the previous day by scores of 17-4 and 6-5, MVNU took the third game of the series by a final of 11-1. Leading 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second, the Cougars erupted for seven runs in the inning to put a stranglehold on the ballgame. MVNU finished with 13 hits on the day. Brady Lester continued his hot start to his career with his third homerun of the season. The freshman was 1-4 at the plate with five RBI. Joe Poremsky batted in three runs and Ty Williams got involved with a two-run single. Rider Minnick finished the game 3-4 at the plate with an RBI of his own.

Reese Willoughby got the win in his start, The sophomore pitched five-innings of shutout baseball and allowed only one hit. He struck out nine. Connor Hendrickson pitched three innings of relief and had six strikeouts. The freshman allowed three hits and one earned run.

MVNU won game four of the series by a final of 7-2. A five run fourth inning boosted MVNU to the win. Lester hit his second homerun of the day and finished with two RBI. Hogan Heck drove in three runs in the win. Cruz McFadden picked up the pitching win as he allowed four hits and one unearned run. He had four strikeouts. (Full box score available soon).

MVNU will play Concordia (NE) and Valley City State on Monday, March 4 at 1:00pm and 4:15pm in Auburndale, Florida.
