Baseball Takes Two from Bethel in Florida

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (5-4, 2-0) moved over .500 with a pair of conference wins against Bethel University (5-7, 0-2) in Davenport, Florida on Friday, March 1.

Game one of the weekend series was a lopsided affair as the Cougars teed off on the Pilots for 17 runs off 18 hits. Trailing 1-2, MVNU scored three runs in the fourth, five runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and six more in the seventh. Casey Kalman and Johnny Nixon led the hitting parade for MVNU as each hit a homerun. Kalman's was a three-run shot and Nixon's was a bases-clearing grand-slam that went over the left field fence.

Logan Fox got the win after pitching five innings. Fox gave up five hits and two earned runs while ending the game with seven strikeouts.

Game two saw MVNU rally late for a 6-5 win. MVNU trailed 5-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, but saw Hunter Billman score on a passed ball, Kalman hit a sac-fly that scored Hogan Heck, and Rider Minnick score the go-ahead run on another passed ball. Cruz McFadden shut down the bottom of the seventh and picked up his first save of the season. Jarin Bertke got the start, pitching five innings and allowing just three earned runs. Bertke gave up three hits and had six strikeouts. Austin Fox got the win for MVNU after holding his own for an inning. A. Fox gave up one hit and had one strikeout.

 

What's Next:

MVNU plays two more against Bethel on Saturday, March 2 in Auburndale, Florida. Game times are set for 9:15am and 12:45pm.
