Baseball Closes Michigan-Dearborn Series with Split

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (2-1) concluded its series against the University of Michigan-Dearborn (1-2) with a doubleheader on Saturday, October 7.

After defeating the Wolverines the previous night by a final of 10-0, MVNU lost the first game of the doubleheader 7-8 before bouncing back with a commanding 14-2 win in the final game.

 

Game One Summary:

Trailing 0-2 after the top of the first, RBI-doubles from the Joe Poremsky and Kaid Carpenter knotted the game back up in the bottom frame of the inning.

A huge top of the second for the Wolverines put them in control as they scored six runs.

MVNU slowly chipped away, scoring a run in the second and two in the fifth.

Casey Kalman hit a two-run homerun in the seventh to cut the deficit to one, but MVNU was unable to tie the game in the seventh to force extras.

Jarin Bertke was tagged with the loss after 1.2 innings of work as the starter. Carpenter pitched five scoreless innings. The freshman had three strikeouts and allowed just two hits.

 

Game Two Summary:

Despite finding themselves down a run after the top of the first, MVNU responded in a big way in the bottom of the inning with six runs.

MVNU stayed hot, pushing across a run in the third, four in the fourth, and three in the fifth in the 14-run explosion. The Cougars finished with 13 hits total.

Johnny Nixon was 2-4 with three RBI. Ryan Willoughby finished the game 3-4 with two RBI. Blaine Keener had two RBI of his own, and Kalman, Brady Lester, and Poremsky each contributed with one.

Cruz McFadden got the win on the mound. McFadden allowed four hits through four innings of work while striking out five. He allowed one earned run. Logan Fox struck out four in two innings of relief without giving up a hit or a run. Will Schlabach pitched one inning. He gave up one run and one hit while striking out two.
