Baseball Opens Fall Season with Victory over Wolverines

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team opened the 2023-24 season on Friday, October 6 against the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

MVNU put together a great first effort at the plate and in the field, winning by a final of 10-0.

 

Game Summary:

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. Reese Willoughby shined on the mound, pitching six scoreless innings. Willoughby gave up just two hits and had nine strikeouts.

MVNU scored five runs in the bottom-seventh. Owynn Gleason hit a solo homer, Casey Kalman sacrificed to score Hogan Heck, and Joe Poremsky smashed a two-run shot to give MVNU control of the game.

The Cougars scored five more runs in the bottom-eighth, forcing a run-rule. Brady Lester hit a three-run bomb, Ty Williams scored off a wild pitch, and Blaine Keener's sac-fly that drove in Carter LaPata clinched the win for MVNU.

Maxwell Donawa pitched great and got credited with the win. Donawa allowed two hits, zero runs, and had one strikeout in two innings of work.

 

What's Next:

MVNU wraps up the three-game series with two more on Saturday, October 7. First pitch of the doubleheader at Cougar Field is set for 12:00pm.
