Cougars Open Goshen Series with Pair of Victories

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (18-20, 13-17 CL) hosted the Goshen College Maple Leafs (9-31, 5-23 CL) on Friday, April 21 at Cougar Field.

MVNU only needed seven innings to defeat the Maple Leafs in game one. A big bottom of the second saw MVNU score five runs to take a 5-0 lead. MVNU tacked on four more runs in the fourth, one in the sixth, and two more in the seventh to propel it to the 12-2 win. Rider Minnick finished 3-4 at the plate with three RBI and a homerun. Casey Kalman, Blaine Keener, Hunter Billman, and Zackary Hoop each finished with 2 RBI. Josh Pettit pitched a great game on the mound for MVNU. The senior tossed six innings of one-run baseball while allowing just five hits to go with nine strikeouts in the win.

In game two, Logan Fox was sensational on the mound in the team's 7-1 victory. Fox pitched a complete game and gave up just one hit and one earned run. Fox had four strikeouts. Offensively, Cooper Crawford went 2-3 at the plate with three RBI and two homeruns. Kalman kept up his hot hitting with a homerun of his own in the win.

What's Next

MVNU will wrap up its series with Goshen College on Saturday, April 22. The doubleheader is set to begin at 11:00am and seniors will be honored before the start of game one.
