Cougars Drop Doubleheader at Marian

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (10-14, 7-11 CL) dropped both games of its doubleheader with Marian University (13-15, 7-9 CL) on Thursday, March 30.

In game one, Hunter Billman's two-run single in the third got the Cougars out to a 2-0 lead. After Marian tied things up at two-apiece in the bottom of the inning, the Cougars scored another run off of Ty Williams' RBI single. The visitors added two more runs in the fifth off a Blaine Keener groundout RBI and an error. However, the Knights stormed back in the fifth and sixth with four unanswered runs and held on to win the game 6-5. Billman and Keener each had two hits. Jarin Bertke got the start on the mound for the Cougars and went 5.0 innings, striking out eight and allowing four runs. Cole Schreck got the loss.

In the second game, the Cougars once again got on the board first through a Casey Kalman RBI single, but the Knights scored a run in the first, two in the second, and one in the fourth to give themselves a 4-1 lead. Kalman singled in another run in the sixth to make it 4-2 and Holden Blankenship also hit an RBI single in the seventh, but it was not enough and Marian took game two with a 5-3 victory. Kalman's two hits and two runs batted in led the team offensively. Josh Pettit took the loss on the mound.
