Women’s Basketball Defeats Grace College on Senior Day

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team (15-13, 7-11 CL) defeated the Grace College Lady Lancers (10-18, 3-15 CL) in Ariel Arena on Senior Day by a final score of 68-62 on Saturday, February 22.

Prior to tip-off, MVNU honored seniors Katie Sprang, Grace Vermilya, and Emily Walker for their hard work and dedication to the program over the past four years.

The Lady Lancers started the game hot, shooting 53% from the field and 50% (3-6) from deep in the first quarter. MVNU was able to build a 17-12 lead after a pair of Megan Weakley threes, but Grace's efficient offense gave it a 23-19 advantage after the first. The second quarter saw both teams battle back and forth for control, but a Lady Lancer layup with 24 seconds left in the quarter gave the guests momentum heading into halftime. MVNU trailed 37-38 at the break.

MVNU's defense began to tighten up in the second half, holding the Lady Lancers to just 24 points on 33% shooting from the floor and just 20% shooting from three. MVNU entered the fourth quarter holding a 55-51 lead and did not trail the rest of the game. Holding a 65-62 lead with 1:24 left in the game, MVNU got a clutch midrange jumper from Weakley to essentially ice the game. The Lady Cougars would go on to win 68-62 and closed the regular season with a winning record of 15-13.

The Lady Cougars outrebounded Grace 39-34. MVNU turned 13 offensive rebounds into 10 second-chance points.

Walker – 6 points (2-2 3PT), 8 assists, 5 rebounds, 1 steal.

MVNU will be the sixth seed in the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals at No. 3 Marian University on February 26 at 6:00 p.m. in Indianapolis, Indiana.
