Baseball Begins Weekend Series at SAU with Split

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (13-19, 8-16 CL) split the first two of its four game series at Spring Arbor University (18-13, 11-13 CL) on Friday, April 14.

MVNU claimed the first game of the doubleheader by a final of 4-2 in 11 innings. Trailing 1-2 in the top of the eighth, Joe Poremsky hit a clutch homerun to tie the ballgame up late and eventually force extras. MVNU took control of the game in the top of the 11th after a Casey Kalman sacrifice-fly and an RBI single from Blaine Keener. Cruz McFadden picked up his NAIA leading eighth save of the season in the bottom of the inning to cement the win for the Cougars. Josh Pettit allowed just three hits and one earned run in seven innings of work on the mound and picked up the win for MVNU. Pettit struck out five SAU batters. Maxwell Donawa pitched three strong innings of relief, allowing just one hit and no runs. He had two strikeouts.

Game two would see the visitors fall by a final of 7-10. Spring Arbor jumped out on top fast, scoring three runs in the first and four more in the third to take a 7-0 lead. MVNU battled back with three runs in each of the next two innings, but the host were able to pad their lead just enough throughout the remainder of the ballgame to halt MVNU's comeback effort. Kalman hit his fifth homerun of the season and finished 2-4 at the plate with two RBI. Keener finished 3-4 with the bat and drove in a team-high three RBI
